About The GL Pod

The GL Pod is a reference for the animals that hunt in the ocean. Each profile collects what published science says about a single predator: how large it grows, how fast it moves, how deep it dives, what it eats, where it lives, and how its population is faring. Those figures appear in the same order and the same units on every page. The result is a set of profiles that can be read on their own or set beside one another without the numbers quietly changing meaning between them.

The site covers sharks, whales and dolphins, seals and sea lions, squid and octopus, crocodiles, large predatory fish, polar bears and penguins. Some of these animals are famous and heavily studied. Others are known mainly from a handful of stranded specimens and a few hours of deep-water video. Where the evidence is thin, the profiles say so instead of filling the gap with a confident-sounding number.

What a profile contains

Every species page follows the same shape. It opens with a short summary and a longer overview that explains what makes the animal distinctive, then moves through measurements, distribution, habitat, diet, hunting behavior, social structure, activity pattern, reproduction, natural predators, ecological role, conservation status and threats. Reading two profiles in sequence should feel like reading two entries from the same book, because the questions asked of each animal are identical even when the answers are very different in quality and detail.

Measurements are recorded as ranges wherever the published literature supports a range. A single number implies a precision that field biology rarely delivers, particularly for animals measured at sea, weighed after death, or estimated from a photograph. Notes attached to individual measurements explain how the figure was arrived at and where it becomes unreliable, so a reader can see the difference between a well-documented average and an outer limit reported once.

The comparison tool

Any two animals in the catalog can be placed side by side. The comparison lines up the same measurement categories, marks which species holds the larger recorded value in each one, and carries over the notes that qualify those values. It exists to make scale legible. Most people have no intuition for the difference between a nineteen-foot shark and a sixty-foot whale, and a table that puts the two lengths on the same axis does more explanatory work than several paragraphs of description.

The comparison is a measurement exercise and nothing more. It does not simulate encounters, predict outcomes, score animals against each other, or produce a winner. Recorded maximum length does not translate into an outcome in the water, and the great majority of the pairings a reader can build have no ecological meaning at all, because the two animals never share a habitat, a depth range or an ocean.

Why these animals

The catalog is organized around a behavior rather than a branch of the family tree. Everything profiled here hunts live prey in salt water, which is why a polar bear and an emperor penguin sit alongside a great white shark. The polar bear hunts seals from sea ice and spends much of its life on and in the ocean, to the point that its formal status treats it as a marine mammal. The emperor penguin is a pursuit predator that has been recorded hunting fish and squid well below 1,000 feet.

Crocodiles are included for the same reason. A saltwater crocodile crosses open water between islands and hunts in estuaries and coastal shallows, which places it firmly in the same story as the sharks and large fish that share those waters. Grouping predators by what they do makes the comparisons more interesting than grouping them by ancestry, because it puts genuinely different solutions to the same problem next to one another.

Where a widely repeated claim has not survived scrutiny, the profile explains why rather than quietly leaving it out.

Where the figures come from

The profiles are compiled from published scientific and government sources: conservation assessments, fisheries and wildlife agencies, natural history museums, research institutions and specialist reference databases. Each profile lists the sources consulted for it, and the sources page describes how those materials are weighted when they disagree. Nothing here is based on original field research, and the site is not a peer-reviewed publication. It is a compilation, and its value depends entirely on the quality of the material it compiles.

Conservation status is taken from a single global authority so that categories mean the same thing across every page. Measurements are stored in metric units, as the literature reports them, and converted for readers who think in feet and pounds. Keeping the underlying values in their published form means a conversion never gets layered on top of another conversion.

Keeping the pages current

Marine biology moves. Assessments are revised, tagging studies extend known depth ranges, and a single well-documented specimen can shift an accepted maximum. Each profile carries the date it was last reviewed, and the full catalog is worked through on a yearly cycle, with individual pages revisited sooner when a major assessment or a widely reported study changes the picture. Corrections from readers are treated as a normal part of that process rather than an interruption to it.
