Updates and Revision Log

This page records what has changed on the site and when. Reference material is only as useful as it is current, so additions, structural changes and substantive corrections are listed here in reverse date order. Routine wording fixes are not logged, but anything that changes a figure, a status or a claim is.

Five new guides were added to the background reading series. How Ocean Predators Find Their Prey covers smell, sight, hearing, echolocation, pressure sensing, electroreception and touch. Speed, Warmth and Body Design in Ocean Predators explains regional endothermy and how to read published top speeds. How Marine Animals Dive Deep on One Breath covers oxygen storage, pressure and the limits of recorded dive depths. Hunting at the Poles compares Arctic and Antarctic predators and what thinning sea ice changes. How to Read a Conservation Status explains the Red List categories, trends and the difference between status and population size.

A glossary of fifty terms was added, with each entry linked to the guide that covers it in depth. A questions and answers page was added to address the points readers raise most often, and this revision log was started.

All species profiles, written comparisons and the original three guides were reviewed against their cited sources, and the review date on each page was updated. Conservation categories, assessment years, scientific names and family placement were confirmed against the accepted authorities, and measurement notes were checked for consistency of units.

Review schedule

Every profile and guide is re-checked against its sources on a twelve-month cycle, and sooner if a major assessment, taxonomic revision or study changes what the sources say. The date shown on a page is the date of its last full review, not the date it was first written.

Planned work includes additional guides on reproduction and life history in marine predators and on the effects of fishing on food webs, further written comparisons for pairs that illuminate each other, and an expansion of the profile catalog.
